life at first gold.

the empress of thailand,

empress ทอง,

before its death,

left behind a final wish:

that its story,

in all its sorrow and beauty,

be passed down by words of mouth only,

never written in history.

it had once been sent on a mission:

to use its beauty, wit, and body

to win the heart of the king of ayutthaya.

not for love.

but for vengeance.

its people had been slaughtered.

families enslaved.

its homeland left in ruins by the king’s brutal hand.

it believed, misled by the man it loved and its own father,

that overthrowing the king was the only path to justice.

so empress ทอง gave itself to the king.

& in return,

it was taught dark magic by those who promised freedom.

with poison brewed from its own flesh,

it killed the king.

not out of hatred,

but out of a desperate belief that it was saving its people.

it used the king’s heart as a stepping stone,

a weapon.

it took it for granted,

never realizing its weight until it was too late.

by its own hand,

it placed a new ruler on the throne.

but it did not go to a savior.

instead,

it went to a man history would call emperor ไร้ความปราณี.

its lover.

a tyrant even worse than the one it had poisoned.

under emperor ไร้ความปราณี,

the kingdom fell into darkness,

nothingness.

it murdered without mercy.

it silenced dissent.

it turned consorts into gifts for soldiers.

women, some once noble,

leapt to their deaths

rather than be used against their own countries.

families were torn apart.

hope, smothered.

& empress ทอง watched.

shattered.

it had been a discarded chess piece only.

a pawn.

it had believed it was doing right,

but instead,

it had helped destroy everything it once swore to protect.

with trembling hands,

it tried to make amends.

it poisoned the emperor,

using it own blood to carry the spell,

the same one it had taught it to use from emperor ไร้ความปราณี to use against its predecessor.

but before it died,

emperor ไร้ความปราณี did something it never expected:

when it took a sword for it.

when rebels found them,

blades drawn,

it stepped in the way.

took the blow meant for empress ทอง.

& died in its arms.

death preached,

"treat others how it want to be treated."

gold disagreed.

"no," it said.

death questioned, confused, "then how?"

gold countered,

"treat them far better than it ever wanted to be treated."

as their blood mixed beneath the watchful eye of a hawk,

their love token,

watching them breath their final breaths,

empress ทอง leaned close to the only consort who had stood by its side through it all.

never knowing it had loved it,

in silence, all those years.

& whistled its last words:

"forget me so.”
