life at first remembering.
anyone can say “i love you,”
but if the heart that says it cannot remember the very moment it loved,
then the words fall short,
like pollens fallen from a wither flower.
if a stranger can remember more of its story
than the people who once stood closest to it,
what does that say?
“i love you” is a feeling,
a softness, a saying,
but “i remember”
is the gesture that gives that feeling gravity,
a weight that stays
even after the emotion drifts.
they spend so much time and pressure on searching for “the one,”
chasing the idea until their lungs burn,
but what if the thing
is not to find the one,
but to be the one?
instead of longing to hear “i love you,”
sometimes it’s even more romantic to hear “i remember.”
because even after hearts break,
after friends part ways,
after lovers drift into strangers
or strangers drift back into their own bubbles,
a piece of it stays,
quiet but stubborn,
like a small sapphire kept in the pocket
long after the walk is over.
it remembers
what it likes,
& what it doesn't.
“i bought this snack because i remember you loved it.”
“i left out the cheese because i remember it made you sick.”
"i sent this gift because it sounded like your laugh."
to experience a break,
with a friend, a partner, a sibling, a co-worker,
or someone who only crossed its life for a moment,
is better than never learning
how the heart rebirths,
how it returns,
how it rises again
with new knowledge in its ribs.
those fractures shape it.
be brave enough to say yes
when two stars finally meet at the same rhythm,
instead of holding back
& letting the moment rust
into a question it carries for years,
& wondering if it might have been “the one.”
be the remembrance they return to,
the light or the shadow,
the small bubbles that lift
or tremble in the chest,
because the bubble it left
stirred again in them,
a spark waking from sleep,
a tiny ignition it could never quite forget,
just like the first whistle of it,
"i remember when i first met you..."
