In the heart of Little Tokyo, a cultural haven for 51 years, Suehiro Cafe stands as a testament to history and community. But now, a tale of greed threatens this cherished legacy. Tony Sperl, heir to the building, is turning his back on the values that built Little Tokyo.

As the lease renewal approached, Sperl, driven by an insatiable desire for profit, raised the rent from $6,500 to a staggering $10,000 per month. To add insult to injury, he slapped a $100,000 renewal fee on the table. This exorbitant demand comes at a time when businesses, like Suehiro, are just starting to rebuild after the harsh blows of the pandemic.

Kenji and Tomoko Suzuki, the dedicated owners of Suehiro, faithfully paid their rent until Sperl stopped cashing their checks. Sperl's actions reveal a stark contrast to the principles upheld by the previous generation. His disregard for the struggles of small businesses recovering from the pandemic paints a grim picture of a landlord blinded by greed.

This isn't the first time Sperl has displaced a local gem. Two years ago, he ousted Family Mart, a Japanese-American owned business, and replaced it with Lethal Amount and Space City Vintage clothing. His efforts to introduce a marijuana dispensary to Suehiro's spot are documented in the LA Times, illustrating a disturbing vision of Little Tokyo transforming into something unrecognizable, mirroring Melrose Avenue.

Sperl's mother, in stark contrast, embraced the multicultural essence of Little Tokyo, fostering close connections within the Japanese American community. However, Tony Sperl's eviction decisions betray a callous disregard for the tenants who contributed to his family's business success and a contempt for Little Tokyo's Japanese and Asian American character.

📣 We raise our voices against this injustice! Sign this petition to implore Mr. Sperl to halt the eviction process against Suehiro and engage in fair negotiations for a realistic lease. Kenji and Tomoko have been compelled to reopen Suehiro Cafe at 4th and Main Streets, downtown, incurring great costs.

If Sperl persists in evicting Suehiro, we pledge to unite against any new tenants occupying the space. This is more than a petition; it's a call for justice, a plea to preserve the soul of Little Tokyo. Let Suehiro thrive, not just for its legacy but for the vibrant, diverse heart that is Little Tokyo. Sign now! 🖊️✨
